Taichung is not short of date-night options. What it lacks is those options arranged into a line you can actually finish.
Here are the three locals genuinely use, and who each one suits.
The Greenway route: the one that walks best
Start at 6:30 from Shen Ji New Village in Lane 368, Minsheng Road — converted dormitories, small shops, and the best light of the day just before dark.
At 7:30, sit down in West District. Wuliushou Yakitori Izakaya (Qinmei) at No. 111 Zhongxing Street is the heavyweight with nearly twenty thousand reviews; for something quieter, take the bistro line along Taiwan Boulevard Section 2. Park Lane at No. 68 Gongyi Road sits alongside, so dinner runs straight into the walk.
At nine, follow the greenway toward the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts at No. 2 Wuquan West Road Section 1. The lawn and the light strip outside close the route.
All on foot, NT$600 to NT$1,200 a head. The virtue here is tolerance for error: if it is going well you walk further, and if it is not, the museum is a natural place to stop.
The Qiuhong Valley route: for two people already comfortable
The lead here is the view, not the food.
Qiuhong Valley Park at No. 30 Chaofu Road lights up after dark, and the sunken terrain frames the waterside and the city hall skyline in one picture. A loop takes thirty to forty minutes.
Then move to the Seventh District. Xitun carries the city’s highest density of bars and bistros, with cocktails around NT$350 to NT$550 and dinner with drinks NT$800 to NT$1,500 a head; WS Bistro at No. 558-1 Wenxin Road Section 2 has over seven thousand reviews, and Pink.B Bistro & Bar on the seventh floor at No. 120 Henan Road Section 3 takes the high-floor line.
For one more stop, Superstar Self-Service KTV (Shizheng Henan) at No. 109 Henan Road Section 3 and Xiangwenxin KTV (Xitun Chaoma) at No. 79 Qinghai South Street sit in the same loop.
The drawback is explicit: the walking distances stretch, so a cab is almost guaranteed. Not recommended for a first date.
The old-town route: for talking slowly
Central District is the cheapest of the three and the richest in conversation.
Miyahara at No. 20 Zhongshan Road lights up at night, Taichung Station at No. 1 Taiwan Boulevard Section 1 and the Taichung Prefectural Hall at No. 99 Minquan Road link a century-old streetscape, and the Lyuchuan waterside path is lit and pleasant to walk.
Take dinner at one of the station-front institutions, then finish in a heritage bar: Lingjiu NiteRoom at No. 6 Ziyou Road Section 2 has over three thousand reviews, PANO 24 Sky Bar on the 24th floor at No. 111 Jianguo Road offers a rare high vantage, and Hope Music Bar at No. 185 Zhonghua Road Section 1 runs live sets. Around NT$500 a head closes the evening. The drawback: old-town lanes are dimly lit at night, so stick to main roads late.
Three conditions that pick the route for you
Weather first. Lyuchuan and Qiuhong Valley are both outdoors — in rain, or on a strong northeasterly winter night, go indoors instead.
Transport second. The Greenway and old town run on foot; Qiuhong Valley runs on cabs. Without a car, budget two extra fares for the Seventh District.
Time last. All three start well at 6:30 and close naturally between 9:30 and ten. To extend, West District bars mostly hold until around midnight and the Seventh District a little later.
