Taichung’s supper map is not lit all at once. It is three lines with three different closing times, and taking the wrong one leaves you standing at a shutter.
The early line: Zhongxiao Night Market and the traditional stalls
Zhongxiao Night Market is the older generation’s image of Taichung supper, running along Zhongxiao Road with grilled meats, oyster omelettes and the old lineup intact. NT$200 to NT$300 a head.
But its clock runs early. Most stalls close around midnight, slightly later on weekends — this line is meant for nine to eleven, not for the small hours.
The old town sits on the same line. In Central District, the braised-pork-rice and noodle counters in front of the station run later than the market, while Taichung Melody KTV at No. 135 Lyuchuan West Street and Lingjiu NiteRoom at No. 6 Ziyou Road Section 2 stretch the area’s hours further.
To finish with massage in Central, Qiansuiyue Foot Wellness (Taiwan Boulevard) at No. 201 Taiwan Boulevard Section 1 and Jindaxia Tuina at No. 146 Zhongshan Road both carry over two thousand reviews.
The main line: Fengjia and Yizhong
These two districts carry the middle of the night, sustained by students and visitors.
Around Fengjia in Xitun, Qixidi Yakitori Izakaya (Fengjia) at No. 365 Fuxing Road approaches six thousand reviews and Jiankangjia Vitality Massage (Fengjia) at No. 566 nears seven thousand, while Yingui KTV (Fengjia) at No. 273-5 Xitun Road Section 2 also passes six thousand — eating, massage and singing all inside one walking radius.
The Yizhong area of North District centres on Chongde Road and Bo Guan East Street. Rongshao Izakaya (Chongde) at No. 246 Chongde Road Section 1 has over four thousand reviews, Xiaomaisuo Izakaya (Boguan) at No. 31 nears four thousand, and Superstar Self-Service KTV (Taichung Park) at No. 195 Gongyuan Road offers all-night rooms.
The late line: izakayas and all-night foot massage
Past one in the morning, the options narrow to two categories.
Izakayas first. Wuliushou Yakitori Izakaya (Qinmei) at No. 111 Zhongxing Street in West District sits near twenty thousand reviews, the most extreme number in the city; Rongshao Izakaya (Nantun Wenxin flagship) at No. 530 Wenxin Road Section 1 passes sixteen thousand. Neither is a supper stall, but both will seat you for something hot at a late hour.
Foot massage second. Chunbulao Foot Spa (Zhonggang) at No. 157 Taiwan Boulevard Section 2 has passed twenty thousand reviews and functions as a landmark; Muchen Foot Spa House at No. 294 Daye Road exceeds eight thousand, and Jinsang Genki Massage Studio at No. 576 Wuquan Road over five thousand. More in West District massage and North District massage.
Two rules for planning the route
First, decide about drinking before you leave. If you are drinking, leave the car at home and start with a cab — do not regret it at the second stop.
Second, do not cross too many districts. Ten to twenty minutes separates Taichung’s districts by car, and three neighbourhoods in one night means the night was spent in transit. Finish one line properly instead of collecting checkpoints.
To start from a single area, the Fengjia night market guide and the Gongyi Road dining belt are the two most-used branch lines.
