The Chongde Strip at Night: Beitun's Local Life Circle

QUICK ANSWER The Chongde night runs along Sections 2 and 3 of Chongde Road, busiest from 6:30 to eleven; izakayas cost NT$400 to NT$600 a head and an hour of foot massage about NT$1,000. On game nights, keep the car out of Section 3 for the half hour around the exit. Ride the MRT green line back downtown from Jiushe or Beitun Main; last trains around midnight.

Chongde Road leaves Section 1 in North District, crosses into Beitun, keeps its name, and changes its rhythm.

Section 1 is an extension of the Yizhong student area — students and visitors. Sections 2 and 3 are where locals live their evenings: dinner on the way home, a foot massage, a detour to the stadium when there is a game. This is one route in timetable order, from 6:30 to the last train.

18:30 First stop: izakayas on Chongde Road Section 2

Start at 吳留手串燒居酒屋-崇德店 (Wuliushou Yakitori, Chongde) at No. 226, Chongde Road Section 2. With more than eleven thousand reviews it is the most-reviewed restaurant in Beitun; on weekdays you are queuing by 6:30, and earlier at weekends. NT$400 to NT$600 a head, skewers with a draught beer being the standard order.

If you would rather not queue, head north. Bistro88light 崇德店 at No. 125, Chongde Road Section 3 runs as a bistro with over fourteen hundred reviews, plenty of seats and short waits, at NT$600 to NT$900 a head.

Further east in the redevelopment zone, 揚 居酒屋 (Yang Izakaya) at No. 111, Chongde 10th Road Section 2 and CHAR CHAR Steak&Bar at No. 415, Chongde 10th Road Section 1 are held up by neighbourhood regulars — around six hundred and a hundred and fifty reviews respectively, a little loud, but easy to settle into.

If you have been drinking, do not drive. Parking on this stretch is scarce after dark, and a cab is quicker anyway.

20:30 Transfer: massage

Walk on along Section 2. 紓心禪養生按摩崇德店 (Shuxinchan Wellness Massage, Chongde) at No. 516 has some three hundred reviews and charges about NT$1,000 for an hour of foot work; 紅摩六感達人泰式舒壓推拿 (Hongmo Thai Massage) at No. 334 on the same road works in the Thai style, has fewer than a hundred reviews, and is easier to walk into on a weekend night.

For higher review counts you have to leave Chongde Road. 足間足體養生按摩館 (Zujian Foot Wellness) at No. 249, Wenxin Road Section 4 carries over thirty-six hundred reviews and is the benchmark massage house in Beitun, under ten minutes away by car. More in Beitun massage and spa.

After alcohol, ask for lighter pressure.

22:00 Next stop: the game-night exit

Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium sits at No. 835, Chongde Road Section 3. On home-game nights the crowd usually exits between 9:30 and 10:30, depending on the day’s schedule.

Do not drive into Section 3 in the half hour before that. The supper stalls and stir-fry joints around the stadium are fullest in that window, and the crowd does not thin until eleven. For post-game supper, leave in the eighth inning or simply wait until after eleven.

On nights without a game the stadium surroundings sleep early. The stalls follow the fixtures; on an ordinary weekday evening there is nothing there but streetlights.

To close with singing, 超級巨星自助式KTV 洲際崇德店 (Superstar Self-Service KTV, Intercontinental Chongde) at No. 430, Chongde 10th Road Section 1 is about ten minutes on foot from the stadium, with over twenty-eight hundred reviews, a self-service buffet format and late sessions as standard. Beitun KTV lists the others.

23:30 Last train: back downtown

The MRT green line begins in Beitun. Jiushe and Beitun Main stations are both ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the strip, with last trains around midnight and about twenty minutes to City Hall Station.

Miss it, and a cab to the Seventh District takes fifteen minutes or so, roughly NT$300.

What not to bother with

Chongde Road Section 1 is not Beitun; it belongs to the Yizhong student area, with student prices and a student clock — a different line from this one.

Skip Dakeng at night. The clay-pot chicken restaurants and mountain eateries do their last round at dusk and close one by one after dark; if you are staying in Beitun and want mountain food, plan it for daytime.

The Chongde strip has no bar belt. For a proper cocktail at a counter, ride the green line downtown, or pick up the late line in the Taichung supper map. The Beitun district guide covers the whole area.

Q&A

FAQ

Q1Where on Chongde Road is the food?

Sections 2 and 3. Section 2 packs the izakayas and massage houses; Section 3 toward the stadium holds the bistros and the game-night supper stalls. Section 1 belongs to North District's Yizhong area, with different prices and a different clock — do not fold it into this route.

Q2How late does the Chongde strip run?

Most izakayas hold until around midnight, some foot massage houses until one or two in the morning, and KTV late sessions are common. Game-night supper stalls follow the exit time and are fullest in the hour after; on nights with no game, the stadium surroundings go quiet after dark.

Q3What does it cost per head?

Skewers and drinks at an izakaya NT$400 to NT$600; bistros NT$600 to NT$900; an hour of foot massage about NT$1,000, forty minutes around NT$600; self-service KTV rooms are priced by time slot, per posted rates. Cheaper across the board than the Seventh District downtown.

Q4How do I get there without a car?

MRT green line stations Jiushe, Songzhu and Beitun Main are all ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the strip, with last trains around midnight and about twenty minutes to City Hall Station. A late ride to the Seventh District is fifteen minutes or so. If you drink, take a cab or a designated driver — parking on Chongde Road after dark is hard to find anyway.

Q5Anything to know about supper after a ballgame?

Do not drive into Section 3 in the half hour before the exit; the streets around the stadium stay jammed until eleven. For post-game supper, leave in the eighth inning or wait until the crowd has thinned. Drivers should park further out and walk — faster than circling for a space.
