Staying in Fengjia has exactly one great advantage: supper needs no cab.
Step out of any of the hotels around Wenhua Road and Fuxing Road and there is food in both directions. The real problem is time — Fengjia’s streets close more than an hour apart, and walk the wrong way and you are facing a shutter. This guide takes the hotel as the centre, splits the area into three walking rings, and describes each by street and category. Stalls are not named.
Three-minute ring: Wenhua Road and Fengjia Road
Out the door is the night-market spine. Wenhua Road runs outward from the Feng Chia University gate at No. 100, with fried snacks, grilled items, drinks, braised bites and sausage-in-sausage lined up all the way to the Fengjia Road junction; both sides of Fengjia Road hold the queue-heavy steak plates and dessert stands.
NT$200 to NT$300 a head fills you. The crowd peaks between nine and eleven — students on weekday nights during term, tourists in the school holidays and at weekends, when walking speed halves.
This ring’s clock runs earliest. Most stalls close around midnight, stretching to about one at weekends, each per its own posting. For the full lineup, head out before eleven; come down after midnight and the spine is already shuttering.
Beyond the market, Wales Coffee Bar at No. 123 Wenhua Road has over twelve hundred reviews and does both coffee and drinks, for nights when you would rather not eat standing; LAVA Shisha Lounge 水煙 調酒 美食 on the second floor at No. 17 Fengjia Road, with some thirteen hundred reviews, is one of the few places in this ring where you can sit late.
Eight-minute ring: Fuxing Road
Walk to Fuxing Road and you reach Fengjia’s second clock.
柒息地串燒居酒屋逢甲店 (Qixidi Yakitori Izakaya, Fengjia) at No. 365 Fuxing Road has over fifty-eight hundred reviews, NT$400 to NT$600 a head for skewers and draught beer, and still has a queue after ten on weekdays; 勝吉の宵町-居酒屋 深夜食堂 燒烤 串燒 熱炒 小酌 (Shengji Late-Night Izakaya) at No. 693-1, with a couple of hundred reviews, lives up to its name and closes late.
Massage is on the same road. 健康家活力按摩館 (逢甲店) (Jiankangjia Vitality Massage, Fengjia) at No. 566 Fuxing Road has over sixty-nine hundred reviews, the highest count of any massage house in Fengjia, offers foot and full-body work, and still has beds in the small hours; 梵懿閣Fan Yi Ga relax指壓 at No. 16, Lane 225, Fengjia Road, first floor, has some three hundred and forty reviews, sits quietly in a lane, and charges about the same.
Eat, get worked on, walk back to the hotel: eight minutes.
Fifteen-minute ring: Xitun Road Section 2
Further out, Xitun Road Section 2 is Fengjia’s last stretch.
銀櫃KTV逢甲店 (Yingui KTV, Fengjia) at No. 273-5 has over sixty-seven hundred reviews, chain standards, late sessions as a matter of course — book a room ahead at weekends; 酒餚居酒屋 (Jiuyao Izakaya) at No. 282-9 has over thirteen hundred reviews and 饗夢居酒屋 shisha bar at No. 273-2 some three hundred, both holding into the small hours.
The walk back from this ring is fifteen minutes. If you have been drinking, a cab from Xitun Road is faster than walking and costs under NT$100. Xitun Road is wide and traffic is fast — do not ride a scooter.
After 2am
Past two, Fengjia is down to two things: the last izakaya round, and a handful of all-night foot-massage houses.
The market spine is empty and convenience stores are the only lit category. For hot food, Fuxing Road’s izakayas are more reliable than Wenhua Road; for somewhere to sit, a massage house beats a bar. What not to schedule
Do not fold the Seventh District into supper. The bars around Shizheng North 2nd Road charge NT$350 to NT$550 a cocktail, sit about ten minutes away by car, and belong to a different kind of night; from a Fengjia hotel you still need a cab home. Skip the famous queue stalls. Any given category has three or more stalls on Wenhua Road, and the difference between the forty-minute queue and the stall beside it is mostly the queue.
