The navigation verdict first. In North District, the phrase “student rate” refers to a time slot, not a shop.
The same room can cost twice as much on a Friday night as on a weekday afternoon; student ID discounts vary by shop and often vanish during summer and winter break — ask at the counter, and the posted price is final. This piece does not draw a circle. It navigates from three starting points: which gate you walk out of decides which shop you walk to.
Start A: university gate → cross the street → Holiday KTV Sanmin
Out the gate at No. 129, Sanmin Road Section 3, and 好樂迪 三民店 KTV (Holiday KTV, Sanmin branch) is directly opposite at No. 136-7. Cross the street. Two minutes.
About 2,100 reviews at 4.2 — the lowest rating in the circle. But it has two things the others do not: chain rooms are consistent, and they issue receipts. Student associations filing expenses, clubs that need paperwork — no hesitation, this is the one.
On weekday evenings during term, after seven, rooms on this stretch are harder to get than on Gongyuan Road: the university’s post-class crowd and the Chungyo Department Store crowd (No. 161, Sanmin Road Section 3) arrive at once. For the student rate, get in before three in the afternoon and out before six.
Start B: Yizhong Street → east → No. 195, Gongyuan Road
Walk out of the shopping district along Shuangshi Road Section 1 toward Taichung Park (No. 65), about ten minutes, to 超級巨星自助式KTV 臺中公園店 (Superstar Self-service KTV, Taichung Park branch) at No. 195, Gongyuan Road. About 3,750 reviews at 4.4 — the most-reviewed room in North District.
The self-service logic: drinks and snacks are help-yourself, pricing is per head, no package bundles. A student group of four to eight splits it cheapest; two people actually lose out, the per-head price has nothing to multiply against. The drawbacks, stated plainly: weekend lobby queues are long and the soundproofing is ordinary — anyone who wants a quiet ballad will frown.
If it is full, do not go far. Across the street at No. 182, 3rd floor, Nature Style KTV-Park Store has 88 reviews at 4.2 — regular rooms, on the small side. Check the floor, go up to the third, do not get off at the wrong one.
Start C: Zhongqing Road Section 1 → not a student route
梅花視聽卡拉ok (Meihua audiovisual karaoke) at No. 53, Zhongqing Road Section 1, 3rd floor, has about 107 reviews at 4.6 and is a karaoke lounge for an older crowd. The room logic, the clientele, the songbook — none of it is what a student group wants.
Navigation ends here. Turn around.
The timetable: when to come, when not to
- Weekday before three in the afternoon: cheapest, emptiest, walk in and there is a room.
- Friday and Saturday after six: district-wide peak, book that afternoon, after eight it is lobby queues only.
- Summer and winter break: the weekday-afternoon edge shrinks, every student in the city is off, rooms fill anyway.
- Midterm and finals weeks: the loosest stretch — even weekday evenings have rooms.
- The week before New Year’s Eve and graduation season in June: book three days ahead.
Where to turn after singing
Voice gone, head back from Gongyuan Road to the lanes off Sanmin Road Section 3, about eight minutes. 昃串燒 (Ze Kushiyaki) at No. 14, Lane 201 has about 380 reviews at 4.9, skewers and beer; 谷奇娜餐酒館 KUCINA bistro at No. 7, Lane 164 has 320-plus at 4.8, Italian with wine. Further north, 宵之月 居酒屋 (Xiao Zhi Yue Izakaya) at No. 40-8, Jinnan Street has 750-plus reviews; without a booking on Friday or Saturday, you wait.
If you drank, no scooter. A cab arrives within three minutes inside the shopping district, and designated drivers stage in this area too.
For a massage to close, the nearest to Gongyuan Road is 湯村麗緻足體養生會館 (Tangcun Lizhi foot massage) at No. 225 — about 1,500 reviews at 4.3, a three-minute walk from Superstar. For a higher rating, 足之樂養生會館 (Zu Zhi Le wellness house) at No. 182-2, Wuquan Road puts “two hours of massage for NT$1,200” right in its shop name, so no guessing on price. Closing times differ; call before heading over after midnight.
Getting back
Late-night buses on Sanmin Road thin out; a cab from Gongyuan Road to Taichung Station is about ten minutes. If you live near campus, walk — the whole circle has a ten-minute radius.
The full list is at North District KTV; a different walk, drawn as a circle around Taichung Park, is in North District KTV and the after-party route; if you only want to eat, see Yizhong student night; citywide room comparisons are in how to pick a Taichung KTV; after-party and closing lists are at North District bars and North District massage.
